Chabad Rabbi in London Describes Community Resilience and Jewish Pride Amid Rising Antisemitism

The story · English

Rabbi Shneor Glitzenstein, who has served nearly two decades at the Israeli Chabad House in London's Golders Green neighborhood, shares how the center has become a vital home for soldiers, Holocaust survivors, students, and families. He explains that many Israelis and local Jews seek to reconnect with their heritage, especially during challenging times. Each Sabbath at the Chabad House offers a unique experience, with gatherings including war veterans, Holocaust survivors, young people, and families, all united in their search for community and spiritual connection.

Rabbi Glitzenstein highlights the natural integration between the local Jewish community and Israeli visitors, noting that many Israelis come to deepen their roots and Jewish identity. The Chabad House is known for its warm Israeli atmosphere, attracting both Israelis and their English friends who appreciate the enthusiasm and heartfelt spirit.

Since the October 7 attacks, the Jewish community in London has faced increased antisemitism, including weekly protests, hate graffiti, arson attacks, and a stabbing near Golders Green. Security around Jewish institutions has been significantly heightened. Despite these challenges, Rabbi Glitzenstein emphasizes the community's strong spirit, with many openly displaying Jewish symbols and speaking Hebrew proudly in public, rejecting fear and embracing resilience.

Regarding the new British government, Rabbi Glitzenstein says it is too early to judge its impact but points to media bias as a major issue, with distorted coverage of Israel affecting public opinion. In response, Chabad and other Jewish organizations actively engage in education and advocacy, bringing speakers to universities to present factual perspectives to both Jewish and non-Jewish audiences. He stresses the importance of truth in shaping public discourse and strengthening Jewish pride and solidarity.
