The story · English

Eighty-six years after Rabbi Levi Yitzchak Schneerson was imprisoned by the Soviet regime solely for his Jewish leadership, a memorial plaque has been installed at the Kyiv detention center where he was held. The ceremony included the detention center's commander and deputy, who collaborated with Rabbi Markovitz to place the plaque. The commander expressed deep regret over the injustice suffered by Rabbi Schneerson, emphasizing the importance of remembering this painful chapter in history.

Rabbi Markovitz highlighted the significance of unveiling the memorial on Rabbi Schneerson's yahrzeit, noting it as a historic rectification and a closing of a painful circle. He remarked that the site, once used to silence Jewish voices, now openly commemorates Rabbi Schneerson's courage and dedication. Additionally, a book based on Rabbi Schneerson's teachings, "Nitzotzei Levi Yitzchak," will be made available to Jewish prisoners at the facility.

This event marks a symbolic restoration of honor to Rabbi Levi Yitzchak Schneerson, father of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, acknowledging his spiritual leadership and the suffering he endured under Soviet oppression.
