Memorial Plaque Unveiled at Kyiv Jail Where Rabbi Levi Yitzchak Schneerson Was Imprisoned

The story · English

On the 20th of Menachem Av, marking the anniversary of the passing of Rabbi Levi Yitzchak Schneerson, a prominent Kabbalist and father of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, a historic memorial plaque was installed at the Lukyanivska detention center in Kyiv. This is the site where Rabbi Levi Yitzchak was imprisoned during the Soviet era for steadfastly maintaining Jewish faith and practice. The initiative was led by Rabbi Yonatan Markovitch, Chabad emissary and chief rabbi of Kyiv, who also serves as the rabbi for Ukraine's prison services, alongside his son Rabbi Ariel Markovitch, who manages Jewish activities in prisons in Kyiv. Together, they worked with the detention center's administration to commemorate Rabbi Levi Yitzchak's legacy.

The plaque installation ceremony included the detention center commander and his deputy, who expressed regret over the injustice suffered by Rabbi Levi Yitzchak, imprisoned solely for being a Jewish rabbi. They acknowledged this as a painful chapter in history that deserves remembrance and honor. The plaque details Rabbi Levi Yitzchak's imprisonment story and features a quote from him about his time in detention. Additionally, the prison received a copy of "Nitzotzei Levi Yitzchak," a book based on his teachings, which will be available to Jewish inmates.

Rabbi Markovitch highlighted the significance of unveiling the memorial on the day of Rabbi Levi Yitzchak's yahrzeit, calling it a historic rectification and emotional closure. He emphasized that where attempts were once made to silence Judaism, there now stands a site honoring Rabbi Levi Yitzchak's courage and devotion. This act preserves the memory of his spiritual leadership and resistance under oppression.
