Israeli Students Prioritize Cost of Living and Economic Crisis Ahead of 2026 Elections

A recent survey of Israeli university students ahead of the 2026 elections reveals that 68% consider the high cost of living and economic crisis as the key factors influencing their vote. The study, obtained by Walla, also highlights a significant distrust in the current government, with 61% of students feeling that their interests are not being represented. This sentiment reflects a generation burdened by economic hardship and a lack of adequate state support.

The financial strain is evident in students' daily lives, as 66% report being unable to save money regularly, and 68% experience anxiety or stress due to living expenses. Military service and reserve duty continue to impact students deeply, with 65% of reservists expressing frustration and burnout, mainly due to perceived inequality in service burdens.

Alarmingly, over a quarter of students (28%) are contemplating emigrating after graduation, with 79% citing the high cost of living as a primary reason. This trend raises concerns about a potential brain drain if economic and social policies do not improve. In response, the National Student Union plans to urge all political parties to commit to adopting the "National Plan for Israel's Youth," a policy framework designed to place young people's needs at the forefront of the next government's agenda.

The plan outlines five main goals: combating the cost of living and expanding housing solutions, strengthening the link between higher education and the labor market, enhancing mental health services, providing broader support for reservists, and ensuring significant youth representation in decision-making bodies. The union also calls for the establishment of a permanent governmental "Future Generation Cabinet" led by the Prime Minister to coordinate youth-related policies across ministries, set measurable targets, and ensure long-term implementation.

This initiative underscores the urgency of addressing young Israelis' challenges to prevent losing an entire generation of educated professionals and skilled workers.
