Knesset Committee Chair Rotman Admits Mistakes in Judicial Reform Handling

Smotrich Committee Chair Simcha Rotman revealed a surprising perspective on the recent judicial reform events during a podcast interview with Akiva Novick on the "Tzaitzanim" show. Contrary to his public image as an uncompromising figure, Rotman admitted he was willing to concede fully on the reform to reach a broad consensus. He described agreeing to a compromise plan proposed by former Minister Yizhar Shai and Dedi Simchi from Benny Gantz's party, believing a smaller agreed reform was better than insisting on the full agenda.

However, Rotman claimed that once the compromise gained momentum, Gantz's faction panicked and withdrew support, attacking Shai and derailing the deal. He criticized the opposition for rejecting consensus efforts, saying, "When you say 'let's agree,' they say 'okay, now stop.'" Rotman also acknowledged a strategic error in focusing exclusively on the reform for the first year, which intensified street protests and created a perception of a coup attempt. He suggested that balancing reform discussions with other legislative work might have reduced tensions.

On a personal level, Rotman spoke about the social cost of the conflict, including estrangement from longtime left-wing friends who turned hostile after his electoral victory. He also recounted tense exchanges with former Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked during the Bennett-Lapid government, describing their interactions as starting with mutual shouting before working together. Despite appointing conservative judges, Rotman sharply criticized Shaked for weakening oversight of the prosecution, arguing she prioritized good relations with the system over reform.

Rotman's candid reflections shed light on internal political dynamics and challenges in advancing the judicial reform, highlighting both external opposition and internal missteps. The interview provides a rare glimpse into the complexities behind the controversial legislation and the personal toll on its key players.
