The story · English

Last Thursday, Check Point CEO Nadav Zafrir appeared to grasp the full scope of the challenges facing the veteran cybersecurity firm. Zafrir, a former commander of Israel's 8200 intelligence unit and founder of venture capital fund Team 8, took the helm of Check Point about a year and a half ago, aiming to revitalize the company. However, Check Point is struggling with declining sales and customer retention, as clients increasingly prefer competitors' cloud-based security solutions. Despite pioneering enterprise firewall technology, Check Point has lagged behind in the cloud security revolution.

The company’s latest financial report revealed another weak quarter, with revenues of $674 million, flat compared to previous quarters and below earlier forecasts. Net earnings per share were $2.55, slightly above expectations due to share buybacks, but adjusted profits remained unchanged year-over-year. Operating cash flow dropped sharply to $170 million, down from $262 million the previous year and over $400 million the prior quarter. The outlook for the current quarter is also subdued, with revenues expected between $655 million and $685 million and earnings per share forecasted to decline slightly.

Investors, initially optimistic about Zafrir replacing long-time CEO Gil Shwed, are losing patience as Check Point’s stock has fallen 23% in 2026, underperforming peers like Palo Alto Networks and CrowdStrike. Zafrir acknowledged that acquisitions alone won’t solve the company’s problems, emphasizing the importance of cultural fit alongside technology in any potential deals. He also identified a key internal issue: Check Point’s sales team has become complacent, focusing on renewing contracts with legacy clients rather than aggressively pursuing new business in a rapidly evolving cybersecurity market.

To address this, Zafrir is restructuring the sales organization and recruiting hundreds of new salespeople worldwide to better engage with the new generation of tech companies. He also highlighted Check Point’s investments in AI-driven security products, including the recently launched AI Network Firewall, developed by 500 new AI specialists. Zafrir remains cautiously optimistic, viewing the cybersecurity industry as transitioning between paradigms and believing there is still time for Check Point to reinvent itself and regain market leadership.

The situation at Check Point draws parallels to other Israeli tech giants like Mobileye, Wix, and Fiverr, where long-serving founders have struggled to adapt to changing markets. Zafrir’s challenge is to overcome entrenched corporate culture and revitalize Check Point’s growth amid fierce competition and technological disruption.
