The story · English

Israeli comedian Daniel Hen, formerly known as Din Shainman, shared his turbulent youth marked by frequent institutionalizations, juvenile detention, and a challenging family background in a recent interview with Erez Tal. Hen entered his first prison at age 14 after years of moving between care facilities, including a brief stay at the Abarbanel institution. Despite these hardships, he discovered that his talent for making others laugh became a vital tool for survival and transformation.

Hen recounted growing up without a father, who left before he was born amid a violent and difficult separation from his mother. This absence and the trauma surrounding it fueled anger and complicated emotions that Hen confronted only in adulthood, including a brief, tense reunion with his father at age 19. Hen also described his early involvement in theft and crime, which escalated from stealing in seventh grade to more serious offenses, leading to multiple stays in juvenile facilities such as Neve Horesh and Beit Hane'ar.

His time in prison was particularly harsh, with frequent violence among inmates, but it was there that Hen took a dramatic risk by joining a drama class. This decision helped him realize the power of humor and performance, which eventually led to a successful career in comedy. Hen created the Netflix hit series "Bad Boy," based on his life story, though watching it was emotionally difficult for him.

A key figure in Hen's life today is fellow comedian Israel Katorza, who welcomed Hen into his family and helped him find stability and support. At 40, Hen embraced his spiritual side, undergoing a bar mitzvah ceremony to close the chapter on his troubled youth. He expressed gratitude for the love and family he found later in life and a belief in divine providence guiding his journey.

Hen also reflected on the violence he experienced and perpetrated in his youth, including a stabbing incident he deeply regrets. He changed his name to Daniel Hen at 19 to start anew and now looks forward to fatherhood, seeking a stable family life. His story highlights resilience, the transformative power of humor, and the importance of connection and support in overcoming adversity.
