AI Hedge Fund Situational Awareness Sells Major Holdings to Citadel Amid Losses

Situational Awareness, a hedge fund known for its aggressive investments in artificial intelligence, has sold most of its stock portfolio to Citadel, the investment firm led by Ken Griffin, following significant losses, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal. Founded about two years ago by Leopold Aschenbrener, a former OpenAI employee, the fund quickly grew to manage over $20 billion in mostly leveraged assets and was regarded by some investors as an "AI oracle." The recent downturn came as investors reduced exposure to AI-related stocks due to concerns over massive infrastructure investments, rising financing costs, and delayed returns.

The fund faced liquidity pressures that forced it to raise cash to meet collateral requirements from lenders. Its public holdings included companies across the AI value chain such as memory chip manufacturers SK Hynix and Sandisk, fuel cell maker Bloom Energy, and cloud service provider Nebius Group. These stocks have experienced sharp declines amid broader weakness in technology and AI shares.

Following the sale, shares of the companies previously held by Situational Awareness surged, as investors viewed the transaction as easing selling pressure caused by the fund's liquidity issues. Citadel reportedly acquired only the portion of Situational's portfolio financed through bank loans, while the fund retained holdings backed by client capital. Situational also continues to hold private investments, including a stake in AI giant Anthropic.

Leopold Aschenbrener gained prominence after publishing a 2024 paper titled "Foresight: The Coming Decade," analyzing AI's future. Early investors in the fund included Stripe founders Patrick and John Collison, as well as Daniel Gross and Nat Friedman, leaders in Meta's AI division. For Citadel, which manages approximately $71 billion, acquiring assets from pressured sellers is a familiar strategy, leveraging opportunities created by forced asset sales.
