Israel Prepares Emergency Voting Procedures Amid Security Threats on Election Day

The Central Elections Committee in Israel is preparing for potential security escalations, including missile attacks during voting and vote counting on election day. This preparation follows warnings from Shin Bet chief David Zini about foreign interference attempts and disruptions to the election process. According to i24NEWS, the committee is set to approve emergency regulations detailing exact procedures at polling stations if a real alarm sounds.

Under the proposed regulations, voting will be immediately suspended upon an alarm. The election integrity supervisor will activate a camera to document events at the polling station, and all voting materials will be sealed in a special emergency envelope secured with adhesive. The polling station secretary will guard this envelope, while the election integrity supervisor will maintain full responsibility for the locked ballot box.

A dedicated emergency protocol has also been developed for the vote counting phase. If an alarm sounds during counting, ballots and count sheets will be quickly packed using a special cover, on which the counting will then be completed. Additionally, to ensure soldiers on the front lines can vote despite challenging conditions, a system allowing identification and voting via a neck tag has been established.
