Mental Health Treatment Costs in Israel: Public Coverage vs Private Clinics

מאת מירב ארד

The story · English

In Israel, the cost of weekly private mental health therapy sessions ranges from 400 to 700 shekels per appointment, totaling approximately 20,800 to 36,400 shekels annually for 52 sessions. Senior psychologists and specialists may charge even higher fees, up to 830 shekels per session. These private costs often include additional services such as psychiatric evaluations, parent guidance, couples therapy, and medication management, which can further increase expenses. For families where both a parent and child receive weekly therapy, monthly costs can reach around 4,000 shekels before additional consultations.

Public health funds (Kupot Holim) offer several mental health treatment options, including multidisciplinary clinics and independent therapists under contract. Prices for these services are significantly lower, with evaluation sessions costing about 68 to 71 shekels and follow-up sessions around 164 to 170 shekels. For example, 52 sessions through the public system cost roughly 8,400 to 8,800 shekels, creating a potential annual savings of up to 28,000 shekels compared to private care.

The public system, however, has limitations such as restricted therapist choice, required approvals, and waiting times that average around six and a half months from referral to treatment start. Private therapy offers greater flexibility in therapist selection, scheduling, and quicker access but at a much higher financial cost. Group therapy is a more affordable alternative available in both systems, costing about 75 to 78 shekels per session and providing interpersonal learning benefits.

Additional funding sources include employer assistance programs, limited private insurance reimbursements, and university clinics offering reduced fees for supervised trainee therapists. Patients are advised to consider the number of sessions, reimbursement policies, therapist qualifications, and treatment duration when choosing between public and private options. The rising demand for mental health services in Israel continues to widen the financial gap between public coverage and private clinics, despite increased government investment in mental health infrastructure.
