New York Mayor Adams Faces Backlash Over Judicial Advisory Committee Lacking Jewish Members

New York City Mayor Eric Adams recently announced the composition of a new judicial advisory committee intended to reflect the city's diverse population. However, four Jewish legal organizations revealed that among the 18 appointed members, not a single lawyer or judge of Jewish background was included. This omission is particularly striking given that Jews constitute about 10% of New York City's population and represent a significant segment of the local legal community.

The Jewish legal groups sent a strongly worded letter to Mayor Adams protesting the lack of Jewish representation and highlighting that no Jewish legal professionals were appointed to the advisory body. They also raised concerns about the rejection of retired Judge John Leventhal's nomination to the committee. The mayor's office explained that Leventhal was excluded because he had previously represented Ghislaine Maxwell, an associate of Jeffrey Epstein, during her appeal process.

Judge Leventhal stated he received no formal explanation for his rejection and emphasized that criminal defense work is a fundamental part of legal practice. He expressed hope that the absence of Jewish members was not intentional. A spokesperson for Mayor Adams did not deny the lack of Jewish members but rejected allegations of discrimination, asserting that the mayor has appointed judges from various backgrounds, including Jewish judges, in the past. They called any claims of religious bias "false."

This controversy emerges amid ongoing tensions between Mayor Adams and New York's Jewish community. Just last week, Adams released a video criticizing the state of Israel and reiterated his campaign promise to enforce an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, constrained only by U.S. law from acting on it.

The dispute over the committee's composition adds to the strained relations between the mayor and Jewish residents, highlighting challenges in balancing representation and political sensitivities in the city.
