The story · English

Rabbanit Renana Birnbaum addressed concerns about the future of Diaspora Jewry at the "State and Jews" conference in Jerusalem, organized by the Zionist World Federation's Department for Zionist Jewish Identity. Despite recent warnings, including from Diaspora Affairs Minister Amichai Shikli who claimed that Diaspora Judaism is "dying," Birnbaum argued that such declarations are premature and overlook the dynamic evolution of Jewish identity worldwide.

Birnbaum emphasized that Jewish identity is transforming rather than disappearing, with new cultural, educational, and social frameworks emerging beyond traditional synagogue membership or religious affiliation. She highlighted demographic challenges and assimilation risks but noted significant growth in Orthodox and Haredi communities and a renewed Jewish identity among many young people, especially following the events of October 7.

She pointed to historical resilience, where Jewish centers have repeatedly adapted and flourished after crises. Birnbaum also underscored the unique spiritual and cultural role of Diaspora Jewry, citing thinkers like Erich Fromm, Franz Rosenzweig, Rabbi Zadok HaKohen of Lublin, and Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, who viewed the Jewish presence outside Israel as a vital mission enriching global Jewish culture and Israel itself.

Birnbaum called for a shift from a discourse of concern to one of partnership between Israel and the Diaspora, recognizing the Diaspora as a full partner in shaping the Jewish people's future. She concluded that the challenge is not to mourn Diaspora Judaism but to listen, collaborate, and build together for the continued vitality of the Jewish people.

Rabbanit Birnbaum leads the dedicated women's emissary training program at the Strauss-Amiel Institute under Or Torah Stone.
