The story · English

Zhu Yiming, founder and chairman of Chinese memory chip manufacturer CXMT, became $10 billion richer in a single day following the company’s IPO on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, where its shares surged 466%. In a rare move, Zhu pledged to allocate approximately 40% of his newfound wealth, valued at about $5.6 billion, to employee compensation programs. This equity package will be distributed over a decade, starting three years from now, though the company has not specified which of its nearly 19,300 employees will benefit.

CXMT’s IPO raised $8.6 billion, marking the largest in Asia this year and propelling the company to a market value of roughly 3.3 trillion yuan, surpassing the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China. Zhu, who is over 50 years old, also agreed to a ten-year lockup on his shares, an unusual restriction for Chinese public companies. His gesture reflects the intense competition for skilled engineers in the booming memory chip sector, where companies like Samsung and SK Hynix dominate but face rising challenges from CXMT.

The memory chip market is experiencing a significant supply-demand imbalance, with DRAM and HBM prices soaring by up to 95% in early 2026 and continuing to rise. SK Hynix leads the high-bandwidth memory (HBM) segment, which powers AI accelerators, while CXMT has grown its market share from 3% to 7.7% in one year, supported by Beijing’s strategic backing to boost China’s semiconductor independence.

However, CXMT faces export restrictions from the U.S., which limits its access to advanced manufacturing equipment and classifies it as having military ties. This makes attracting and retaining top engineering talent critical to narrowing the gap with South Korean rivals. Meanwhile, South Korean firms offer substantial annual bonuses, with SK Hynix reportedly paying an average of $477,000 per employee in 2026, fueling a talent war that has seen hundreds of engineers switch companies.

The broader industry impact includes rising prices for consumer memory components like DDR5, which have doubled and are expected to double again by year-end, leading to increased costs for computers and electronics globally, including in Israel. CXMT’s growth and Zhu’s unprecedented employee stock plan highlight the strategic importance of human capital in the global semiconductor race.
