Chinese Chip Founder Gives 40% of $10 Billion Windfall to Employees Amid Memory Chip Talent War

The story · English

Zhu Yiming, founder and chairman of Chinese memory chip maker CXMT, became $10 billion richer in a single day following the company’s explosive stock debut on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, where shares surged 466%. In response, Zhu pledged to allocate approximately 40% of his newfound wealth, equating to 767.9 million shares valued at about $5.6 billion, to employee compensation programs. This move aims to close the talent gap with South Korean giants Samsung and SK Hynix, who dominate the global memory chip market and fiercely compete for skilled engineers with lucrative bonuses.

The CXMT stock offering raised $8.6 billion, marking Asia’s largest IPO this year and propelling the company’s valuation to roughly 3.3 trillion yuan, surpassing major Chinese banks. Zhu, who is over 50 years old, also agreed to a rare 10-year lockup on his shares, signaling long-term commitment. However, the employee share plan will vest gradually over a decade starting three years from now, and the company has not yet specified which of its nearly 19,300 employees will benefit.

The backdrop to this generosity is a booming memory chip market, with DRAM prices rising sharply due to supply shortages and surging demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) used in AI accelerators. Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron control nearly 90% of the DRAM market, while CXMT has grown to hold about 7.7%, up from 3% last year. Despite U.S. export restrictions limiting CXMT’s access to advanced manufacturing equipment, the company relies heavily on attracting and retaining top engineering talent to compete.

In South Korea, SK Hynix and Samsung offer annual bonuses reaching hundreds of thousands of dollars, fueling a talent war that has seen around 200 engineers switch companies recently. CXMT’s stock-based incentive package represents a longer-term bet on employee loyalty and growth. Meanwhile, global memory prices continue to rise, impacting consumer electronics costs worldwide, including in Israel, where companies like Vibit Nano are developing related memory technologies.

This strategic move by Zhu highlights the critical role of human capital in the semiconductor industry’s most competitive segment and reflects China’s ambition to become self-reliant in chip production amid geopolitical tensions and trade restrictions.
