Israel Launches New System Allowing Vehicle Owners to Preemptively Block Ownership Transfers

The story · English

Following over a year of dealing with fraud cases involving stolen identities and forged documents used to transfer vehicle ownership, Israel is set to introduce a new system enabling car owners to block ownership transfers in advance through the government’s personal online portal. This initiative aims to prevent criminals from fraudulently transferring vehicle ownership without the owner's knowledge, a scam that has affected hundreds of citizens in the past year.

Former Knesset member Avir Kara, who has been actively involved in addressing these fraud cases, explained that some victims discovered vehicles registered in their names that they never purchased, while others struggled to prove unauthorized transfers of their cars. Many also faced legal battles and loan obligations linked to transactions they never conducted. Kara currently handles about 20 unresolved cases where owners have yet to regain their vehicle ownership or clear their names from fraudulent loans and purchases.

Kara advocated for this preventive measure by proposing to the CEO of Israel Post and government officials a simple solution: allowing vehicle owners to proactively block ownership transfers via the government’s digital personal area. This system, expected to launch next week, will close loopholes exploited by fraudsters and spare victims from financial losses and prolonged legal disputes.

Kara expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Transport, the National Digital Directorate, and the government identification system for advancing the project. If successful, this new mechanism could significantly reduce vehicle ownership fraud in Israel and protect citizens from the damaging consequences of identity theft and document forgery.
