Gastroenterologist Recommends Raspberries for Daily Fiber Intake and Gut Health

The story · English

Over 90% of women and 97% of men do not consume the recommended daily amount of dietary fiber, a crucial nutrient for overall health. Gastroenterologist Dr. Will Bulsiewicz highlights raspberries as an excellent fruit to help close this fiber gap. One cup of raspberries provides about 8 grams of fiber, covering nearly a third of the daily recommended intake for women and a quarter for men. This fiber supports gut bacteria, promotes healthy digestion, and helps maintain a feeling of fullness.

Beyond fiber, raspberries are rich in vitamin C and polyphenols, antioxidants linked to reduced inflammation and cellular protection. Observational studies also associate berry consumption with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, although causation has not been established. Additionally, raspberries are relatively low in FODMAPs, making them a suitable fruit option for people with irritable bowel syndrome who may experience digestive discomfort from other fruits.

Dr. Bulsiewicz suggests various ways to incorporate raspberries into the diet, such as adding them to smoothies, salads, homemade chia seed jam, refreshing drinks, or spreading mashed raspberries on whole-grain bread with goat cheese or honey. Increasing raspberry intake can be a practical step toward improving fiber consumption and supporting digestive health.
