Experts Explain How Much Protein Is Healthy and When It Becomes Excessive

The story · English

Protein is essential for muscle building, enzyme and hormone production, immune function, and skin and hair renewal. However, consuming more protein is not always better, and concerns about kidney damage from high protein intake are often overstated. The appropriate amount depends on individual factors such as health status, activity level, and dietary balance.

For healthy adults, the basic recommended protein intake is about 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight daily, with the European Food Safety Authority suggesting a similar 0.83 grams. Athletes typically require more, between 1.2 and 2 grams per kilogram, depending on their training intensity and goals. Older adults are advised to consume around 1 to 1.2 grams per kilogram to maintain muscle mass and daily function, as insufficient protein is more common than excess in this group. In cases of illness, recovery, or calorie-restricted diets, protein needs may increase further.

There is no official upper limit for protein intake in healthy populations. While intakes above 2 grams per kilogram are often unnecessary for non-athletes, they are not inherently harmful. Claims of a 2.5 or 3.5 grams per kilogram ceiling lack conclusive evidence and are based mainly on physiological calculations rather than clinical trials. Excess protein is not stored but metabolized, with nitrogen excreted via the kidneys. Although high protein intake raises kidney filtration rates, studies have not shown short-term kidney damage in healthy individuals. However, long-term effects of very high protein consumption remain unclear. For those with kidney disease, protein intake is often reduced to lessen metabolic strain, tailored to disease stage and treatment.

A key concern with high-protein diets is the displacement of other vital foods like vegetables, legumes, fruits, and whole grains, which can reduce fiber intake and alter gut microbiota fermentation. Therefore, balanced diets with adequate protein from diverse sources alongside sufficient fiber are recommended. Spreading protein intake evenly throughout the day is preferable to consuming large amounts in a single meal or relying on fortified products unnecessarily.

In summary, while excessive protein can be problematic, there is no universal threshold for harm. The goal is to consume enough protein to meet individual needs without compromising overall dietary quality and health.
