Summer Sleep Struggles Intensify for Adults with ADHD Due to Light and Stress

The story · English

Summer months pose significant challenges for maintaining healthy sleep patterns, especially for adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The natural delay in melatonin secretion caused by longer daylight hours and exposure to blue light from screens disrupts the body's sleep signals, making it harder to fall asleep despite feeling tired. Additionally, summer routines often involve later bedtimes and irregular wake times, further destabilizing the sleep cycle.

For adults with ADHD, these issues are compounded by what experts call "sleep revenge," where the brain, overwhelmed by daytime sensory overload and cognitive demands, resists shutting down at night. This leads to staying awake late into the night to enjoy quiet time, ironically sacrificing sleep to gain mental calm. Their biological clocks are naturally delayed by three to four hours, making them night owls who feel more alert in the evening and struggle to fall asleep early.

To improve sleep quality, specialists recommend practical steps such as establishing an earlier quiet period free of screens and demands, cooling the sleeping environment to lower body temperature, dimming lights and using warmer lighting from around 8 p.m., and creating a gentle transition routine before bed like reading or listening to calming podcasts. Understanding these unique neurological and environmental factors can help individuals with ADHD develop supportive night routines and reduce guilt over sleep difficulties during the summer.
