Swedish State TV Sparks Controversy Over Pro-Palestine Music Performance

The story · English

A performance on Sweden's public broadcaster sparked outrage after singer Anna-Carolina declared she could travel anywhere except Tel Aviv, followed by a rapper calling to "free Palestine." The incident occurred during a music program featuring the song "Bimini Road" and was widely shared on social media, prompting criticism within Sweden.

Odelia Magnusson, an Israeli living in Sweden for two decades, condemned the broadcast as crossing a red line, emphasizing that the state-funded channel is supposed to be apolitical and should not air such statements, especially during prime time with audience applause. She noted the program's interactive format made the political message even more problematic.

Magnusson expressed frustration over what she described as Sweden's anti-Israel stance, citing previous restrictions on political statements during Sweden's Eurovision pre-selection and recent pro-Palestinian protests, including one outside a Stockholm hospital where a doctor protested in uniform. Swedish public figure Daniel Schatz also questioned whether the show was an appropriate platform for incitement against Israel.

The broadcaster has not responded to public complaints, reportedly focusing on a recent attack at the Berlin Pride parade. The controversy highlights ongoing tensions in Sweden regarding Israel-Palestine discourse in public media and society.
