Right-Wing Debate Highlights Loyalty Test Amid Political Uncertainty in Israel

The story · English

A brief exchange between Israeli media figures Shimon Riklin and Ariel Kahana escalated into a fundamental dispute over the boundaries of the right-wing camp. The conversation began with Riklin asking Kahana whom he plans to vote for in the upcoming elections. Kahana replied that he had not yet decided, prompting Riklin to press whether Kahana was reconsidering his place within the right-wing bloc. Kahana avoided a direct partisan answer, stating instead that his bloc is "the people of Israel."

Riklin criticized this as an evasive response, emphasizing that the question was about Kahana's political affiliation. Kahana responded by recalling a shared experience where Riklin had pledged not to support Netanyahu without sovereignty being applied in Judea and Samaria, referencing the Trump plan. This was meant to illustrate that even staunch Netanyahu supporters can have conditions and doubts without abandoning their right-wing identity.

Riklin rejected Kahana's attempt to personalize the discussion, insisting the question was straightforward and expressing regret over Kahana's stance. Kahana countered that voting preference is inherently personal and that his reminder was not an attack but a demonstration that political dilemmas are common.

This confrontation between two figures associated with the right and religious Zionism revealed two contrasting views of the right-wing camp. Riklin views voting as a clear political test of loyalty to the current right-wing bloc and Netanyahu, while Kahana rejects the notion that criticism of Netanyahu or electoral indecision excludes one from the right. The debate thus exposed a deeper question about whether the right is defined by ideology or by political allegiance primarily to Netanyahu.
