Safed Chief Rabbi Says Current Events in Iran Are Building the Third Temple

The story · English

Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu, the chief rabbi of Safed, recently discussed the biblical verse from the prayer "For You, Lord, kindle fire, and by fire You will build it," relating it to current events in the Middle East. He explained that the "fire" mentioned in the verse has a dual meaning: one is the positive fire of Torah study, love for Israel, and dedication to building the land, which internally constructs the redemption. The other is the destructive fire allowed by God against Israel's enemies, which externally contributes to the process of redemption.

Rabbi Eliyahu pointed to recent incidents such as the arson attacks in the Gilad Farm area as examples of destructive internal strife, describing them as "remnants of the fire of destruction." He emphasized that while internal discord causes harm, the ongoing turmoil in Iran represents the divine fire purging evil enemies. He stated that the current situation in Iran is part of the divine process that will ultimately lead to the building of the Third Temple in Jerusalem.

This interpretation ties the geopolitical tensions and conflicts involving Iran directly to the eschatological vision of redemption and rebuilding the Temple, framing these events as integral to the fulfillment of biblical prophecy. Rabbi Eliyahu's remarks were made during a recent lesson and reflect his perspective on the spiritual significance of contemporary Middle Eastern conflicts.
