Experts Advise Play-Based Approach to Overcome Children's Picky Eating Habits

The story · English

Many parents struggle with children who refuse to eat anything but white pasta and fries, leading to stressful mealtimes and power struggles. Naturopath Shira Averbuch explains that picky eating often stems from more than just behavioral issues; physiological factors like sensory sensitivity and gut microbiome imbalances play a significant role. Children with sensitive nervous systems may experience food textures and smells more intensely, while gut dysbiosis can make digesting certain foods difficult, reinforcing a preference for low-fiber, processed foods that feed harmful bacteria.

Averbuch emphasizes that feeding children only formula or processed foods to ensure vitamin intake is insufficient, as fiber and varied textures are crucial for oral motor development and overall health. She highlights the gut-brain connection, noting that 90% of serotonin is produced in the gut, making a healthy microbiome vital for mood and behavior. The common cycle of sugar highs and lows from carbohydrate-heavy diets can also exacerbate tantrums and hyperactivity.

To break this cycle, Averbuch advocates avoiding confrontations at the dinner table and instead fostering healthy eating habits early. She authored "The Nibbling Book," a playful storybook encouraging toddlers to eat fruits and vegetables by role-playing animals, which helps reduce mealtime pressure and strengthens parent-child bonds. She advises involving children in food preparation and harvesting to build positive associations with natural foods.

Averbuch warns that processed food manufacturers design addictive products that make it harder for children to accept healthy options, creating metabolic dependencies rather than mere pickiness. She stresses the importance of parental modeling, as children imitate adult eating behaviors. Ultimately, she calls for a return to natural, whole foods to support children's physical and social development and prevent chronic health issues.
