The story · English

Excavation work has started at Ketziot Prison in the Negev to build a moat intended for crocodiles, as part of a security enhancement plan led by National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir. The project involves digging a roughly 170-meter-long trench around a special wing inside the prison compound, which is not visible from outside. Officials confirmed the preparations, although it remains uncertain if crocodiles will actually be placed there.

This initiative follows a recent declaration by Environmental Protection Minister Idit Silman, who designated the Nile crocodile as a "managed wild animal." This legal change, prompted by Ben-Gvir, allows authorized security bodies, including the Israel Prison Service, to pilot keeping crocodiles on their premises under appropriate conditions.

Ben-Gvir proposed the concept about six months ago, suggesting a prison surrounded by crocodiles to enhance deterrence and reduce security costs. The Israel Prison Service conducted professional assessments and zoo visits, concluding that crocodile moats could strengthen escape prevention. Previously, the Nile crocodile was protected and could only be kept in licensed zoos, but the new status enables this security pilot exclusively for authorized agencies.

Ben-Gvir's office stated, "Those who have committed heinous crimes deserve to be guarded by a creature as fierce as they behaved." The project marks a novel approach to prison security in Israel, with work commencing shortly after the environmental declaration was signed.
