The story · English

A centuries-old historical mystery regarding the burial place of Rabbi Shlomo Yitzchaki, known as Rashi, one of Judaism's greatest biblical and Talmudic commentators, has been resolved. An ancient manuscript discovered in the Oxford University Library in England, alongside archival documents and medieval maps recently found in France, definitively confirm that Rashi is buried in Troyes, France, his birthplace. Born in 1040 in Troyes, Champagne region, Rashi studied in German Torah centers before returning to Troyes to establish a yeshiva and compose his foundational commentaries until his death in 1105.

The Jewish cemetery in Troyes was destroyed following the expulsion of Jews from France in the late Middle Ages, and the exact location of Rashi's grave was lost over centuries. Various unsubstantiated rumors had suggested Prague or Worms as his burial site, but historians dismissed these claims due to lack of evidence. The breakthrough came during research for a scholarly tour in London, when a rare complete version of the historical chronicle "Seder HaYachas" was found in Oxford. This text, written in France shortly after Rashi's death, explicitly states that in the year 1105 "the light of Israel was extinguished... and he was laid to rest with his ancestors in Troyes."

This direct reference supports the claim made by Rashi's grandson, Rabbeinu Tam, who called Troyes "the city of my ancestors' graves." Following the Oxford discovery, French historians uncovered independent Christian manuscripts and medieval urban maps confirming the location of the ancient Jewish cemetery in Troyes. A comprehensive research report is expected by late summer. Currently, negotiations are underway among European Jewish community representatives, preservation groups including "Ohelim Tzadikim," legal experts, and French local authorities to legally designate the site and erect a memorial honoring Rashi at the precise burial location.
