New Investigation Explores Women of the Wall's Role in Changing Israel's Jewish Identity

A new investigative series by Ornit Foran Suissa revisits the origins and ongoing conflict surrounding the Western Wall, Judaism's holiest site. The first episode focuses on the Women of the Wall organization, their monthly provocations at the site, and the clashes they provoke. The series traces the struggle back to the late 1980s, including the first High Court petition in 1989, highlighting nearly four decades of dispute over the site's character.

The Women of the Wall's fight extends beyond prayer rights to a broader agenda seeking to alter Israel's Jewish identity. This includes recognition of non-Orthodox streams, promotion of Reform conversion, civil marriage, and other religion-state issues. Some activists acknowledge that breaking the status quo at the Wall could pave the way for wider changes in Israeli society.

Concerns are raised about potential damage to the Western Wall's historical, archaeological, and national significance, which has symbolized Jewish memory and longing for generations. MK Avi Maoz, chairman of the Noam party, criticizes the Women of the Wall, saying they "shout more than pray" and do not truly pray there. Conversely, attorney Shmuel Berkovich, an expert on holy sites, describes the movement primarily as a feminist struggle.

Chaya Malul Gaz, founder of the "Angels of the Wall" group, also comments that the Women of the Wall's actions disrupt prayer for others, which she says is their goal. She stresses there is no discrimination at the Wall, noting that Torah scrolls are not allowed for men or women, emphasizing equality in restrictions. The episode reveals the deep divisions and disputes over a site that has historically united the Jewish people across generations.
