Experts Warn Against Heating These Foods in Microwave Due to Safety and Quality Risks

מאת אפרת ברינר

The story · English

Microwaves are widely used for their convenience, but experts caution that certain foods should never be heated this way due to safety hazards and quality degradation. Blue cheeses like Roquefort and Gorgonzola do not heat evenly in microwaves, becoming greasy, rubbery, and emitting unpleasant odors. Whole fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes and grapes can explode from steam buildup unless pierced before heating.

Using plastic containers not labeled "microwave safe" can cause melting and chemical leaching, while melamine containers should be avoided altogether. Red meat heats unevenly, resulting in dry, inconsistently cooked portions. Heating whole eggs, with or without shells, risks dangerous explosions inside the microwave. Tomato sauce tends to splatter due to trapped steam, so it must be covered properly.

Heating hot peppers releases capsaicin particles that irritate eyes and throat when the microwave door is opened. Baby bottles should not be microwaved because uneven heating creates hot spots that can burn infants. Foods like French fries lose their crispness and become soggy; ovens or air fryers are better alternatives.

Users are advised to understand the physical properties of foods before microwaving and to follow manufacturer instructions or opt for traditional heating methods like ovens or stovetops to ensure better taste and safety.
