Israeli Supreme Court Rejects Attempt to Influence Family Court Judge with Cash Envelope

A family court judge in Rishon LeZion, Oved Elias, discovered a mysterious envelope containing 1,000 shekels in cash outside his home late at night. This unusual incident occurred amid a complex inheritance dispute, with one party alleging that the envelope was deliberately placed by the opposing side's mother to improperly influence the judge. Claiming it constituted an illicit bribe, the party demanded the judge recuse himself from the case.

The judge promptly reported the envelope to the legal advisor of the court administration, Barak Leizer, to handle the matter according to protocol. The opposing side vehemently denied the bribery claims, calling the recusal request "absurd and unfounded" and accusing the accusers of trying to delay proceedings and manipulate the judicial panel through improper means.

Supreme Court President Isaac Amit reviewed the appeal and decisively rejected it, emphasizing that provocations will not determine judicial assignments. He stated, "No litigant may decide who will judge their case through tricks or provocations." Amit noted the bribery allegations were speculative and unsupported by evidence, and even if future investigations prove intentional placement of the envelope, it would be a serious offense but insufficient grounds to replace the judge.

As a result of the dismissal, the appellant was ordered to pay 1,500 shekels in court costs to the state treasury. Judge Elias will continue presiding over the inheritance case. The Supreme Court’s ruling sends a clear message that attempts to manipulate judicial proceedings through unethical tactics will not be tolerated, underscoring the judiciary’s commitment to independence and impartiality even in emotionally charged disputes.
