Trump Announces Release of Intelligence on Alleged Chinese Election Interference in US

On Thursday, former US President Donald Trump declared his intention to release intelligence information exposing what he described as "shocking vulnerabilities" in the American election system. Speaking from the White House, Trump accused China of executing the largest data breach in election history, claiming that since the 2020 elections, Beijing illegally obtained records of 220 million American voters. He further alleged that China engaged in activities aimed at undermining his 2020 election victory and sought to erode trust in the US presidency by inciting journalists to publish negative reports.

Trump criticized government officials for downplaying the significance of Chinese interference and revealed that National Security Agency documents regarding Beijing's involvement were concealed. He called for investigations by the Director of National Intelligence and the FBI into China's actions. Emphasizing the urgency of protecting the US electoral system, Trump stated that free and fair elections are essential for the nation and vowed to prevent ongoing weaknesses. He assured that the upcoming midterm elections would be fair and announced plans to safeguard American voter data, urging Congress to pass the "Save America" voter ID law.

The speech came less than four months before the November midterm elections, where Republicans aim to maintain their congressional majority. Democrats criticized the address as groundwork for contesting election results if Republicans lose. Trump's claims contradict a 2021 official assessment by the US intelligence community, which found no evidence that China or any foreign actor attempted or succeeded in altering any technical aspect of the 2020 presidential election, including voter records, ballots, vote counts, or outcomes. The Chinese Embassy in Washington dismissed the accusations, stating Beijing has never interfered and will never interfere in US presidential elections.
