Malaysia Expels Dual Citizens With Israeli Ties Amid Tech Project Controversy
Malaysia has launched a strict crackdown on individuals holding Israeli citizenship, particularly targeting those with dual nationality. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim declared that any Israeli citizen found in Malaysia will be immediately expelled, reaffirming the country's firm policy of non-recognition of Israel. He stated, "If there are Israeli citizens here, since we do not recognize Israel, they will be expelled immediately."
The issue surfaced following viral social media reports about a collaborative technology and living project called "Network School," established by a former Coinbase executive. This initiative operates in Forest City, Johor state, southern Malaysia. Allegations emerged that some participants in the project are dual citizens including Israelis who entered Malaysia using their non-Israeli passports.
Anwar Ibrahim, known for his outspoken support of Hamas and refusal to condemn the October 7 attacks, responded strongly to journalists, emphasizing that if the claims prove true, those involved will be expelled without delay. He stressed that the government will not compromise on national security or its political stance toward Israel, reiterating that Israelis are not permitted to reside in Malaysia under any circumstances.
Following these revelations, Malaysian immigration and security authorities launched an official investigation and conducted raids at the project's residential complex in Forest City. Immigration officers physically checked the documents and identities of 266 foreign nationals from 40 countries to ensure none secretly hold Israeli citizenship, according to reports by Itamar Eichner of ynet.
Malaysia is considered one of the most hostile Muslim-majority countries toward Israel, maintaining no diplomatic relations and strictly prohibiting Israeli entry. This hostility extends to immediate deportation of Israelis even if they hold dual citizenship and only transit through Malaysia on connecting flights.
