EU Orders Google to Open Android AI Apps and Search Data to Competitors

The European Commission has mandated that Google must grant competing AI companies full access to its Android applications and share its search data with rival search engines. These rulings, issued under the Digital Markets Act (DMA), require Google to implement full AI app access by July 2027 and share search data by January 2024. Teresa Ribeiro, Vice President of the European Commission responsible for competition, emphasized the need to maintain fair competition and user choice while protecting privacy. The first decision aims to prevent Google's dominance in AI by allowing alternative AI assistants equal access to Android's core system capabilities, enabling them to perform tasks such as voice commands and app interactions like ordering taxis or providing chat suggestions. The second decision compels Google to share search data, including with AI chatbots offering search functions, to foster innovation and a level playing field. The Commission highlighted privacy safeguards through multi-layered anonymization developed with privacy experts and allows Google to assess potential cybersecurity or privacy risks before sharing data. Google responded by warning that these decisions risk undermining essential privacy and security protections for millions of Europeans and criticized the Commission for ignoring evidence of potential harm despite Google's proposed solutions.
