Meta Patents AI-Powered Smartwatch to Continuously Monitor User Emotions, Sparking Privacy Concerns
Meta has filed a patent for a new AI-based wearable device designed to continuously analyze the emotional state of its user throughout the day. The system uses constant audio listening, voice analysis, and environmental data collection to detect emotional indicators such as sighs, laughter, tone of voice, and changes in speech patterns. According to the patent published in July 2026, the device also gathers additional data including user location, daily activities, digital interactions, and medication schedules to create an ongoing emotional profile.
Meta claims the technology could significantly enhance personal fitness and health by providing more precise and tailored emotional insights than a human personal coach. The system is intended to deliver periodic reports analyzing emotional patterns and referencing specific moments from the day that support its conclusions. However, the continuous listening feature raises serious privacy concerns, as it could record conversations of others without their knowledge, unlike voice assistants that activate only with a wake word.
Critics highlight this development as an extension of Meta’s existing AI-driven devices, such as the smart Ray-Ban glasses, and point to the extensive use of large personal data sets, including messages, books, and environmental objects, to train the AI model, intensifying privacy risks. The patent also recalls Facebook’s 2012 "emotional contagion" experiment, where the company manipulated users’ news feeds without consent to study mood influence.
Meta emphasizes that patent filings often protect ideas rather than guarantee product launches. A company spokesperson stated, "Patents are frequently registered to protect concepts and do not necessarily indicate a future product." Nonetheless, the patent reveals Meta’s vision of a future where emotions become measurable, analyzable, and potentially monetizable data.
