Dutch Archaeologists Uncover 3,000-Year-Old Elite Tomb in Luxor, Egypt

The story · English

A Dutch archaeological team from Leiden University has uncovered a 3,000-year-old tomb on the west bank of Luxor, Egypt, according to the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities. The tomb dates back to the New Kingdom period, likely the Ramesside era, and is located in the necropolis of Sheikh Abd el-Qurna. It belonged to a man named Paser, as indicated by inscriptions found at the site. The tomb features a typical elite design of the period, including an open courtyard leading to a rock-cut chapel shaped like the letter T. Its walls are adorned with colorful paintings and inscriptions that reflect the artistic and religious traditions of ancient Egypt during the New Kingdom.

This discovery offers valuable insight into the life of local nobility and burial beliefs of that era. It adds to a series of significant finds in the Luxor region in recent months, which include dozens of painted coffins, rare papyri from the Third Intermediate Period, and restored tombs from the Ramesside era. Leiden University has maintained a long-term research presence in Sheikh Abd el-Qurna, focusing on tombs that were reused over generations. Researchers emphasize that even well-explored areas still hold potential for new discoveries that continue to deepen understanding of ancient Egyptian civilization.
