Former MK Files Petition Against Gender Segregation on Bnei Brak Sidewalks
Following a report by Channel 13, former Knesset member Michal Rozin announced on Tuesday her intention to petition the Supreme Court against Bnei Brak municipality's decision to enforce gender segregation on city sidewalks. Rozin stated, "Bnei Brak will not become Tehran," emphasizing opposition to the policy.
The previous evening, MK Vladimir Beliak from the Yesh Atid party submitted a formal request to the State Attorney, Gali Baharav-Miara, demanding a legal review of the municipality's decision. The petition highlighted that the segregation infringes on citizens' rights to equality and freedom of movement.
It argued that sidewalks and city streets are public spaces belonging to all citizens, and local authorities do not have the legal authority to designate them as gender-segregated areas. The case is expected to proceed to the Supreme Court for further examination.
