Oman and Qatar Targeted Amid Mediation Efforts to De-escalate Iran-US Tensions

Oman and Qatar, key regional mediators between Iran and the United States, were attacked within a day of diplomatic visits aimed at reducing tensions. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi visited Oman on July 11 to meet with Omani Foreign Minister Badr Al-Busaidi, discussing coordination around the Strait of Hormuz and maritime security. However, just 24 hours later, drone strikes targeted several sites in Oman's Musandam Governorate.

Qatar, which also plays a central role in regional mediation and recently sent a delegation to Iran to strengthen its position, experienced attacks as well. Authorities reported three injuries, including a child, from shrapnel during interception operations. Meanwhile, Pakistan has been actively involved in preventing further escalation, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Foreign Minister engaging in talks with Iranian officials to promote peace.

The timing of the attacks sparked outrage and irony across the Arab world, highlighting the paradox of countries working to ease conflict becoming targets themselves. Critics pointed to the contradiction of Araghchi’s diplomatic visit to Oman hours before the attacks and accused Iran’s hardline factions of undermining diplomatic efforts. Some commentators also questioned Oman’s willingness to endure such attacks without stronger condemnation.

Analysts note that behind the mediation efforts lies a regional power struggle. Qatar is positioning itself as the Gulf mediator, leveraging frozen Iranian assets and better communication channels with Tehran, despite suffering attacks on its territory. Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, is strengthening ties with Pakistan, which has sent troops to Saudi Arabia and serves as a mediator with Iran. Experts suggest Iran targets the smaller Gulf states more to deepen divisions and prevent a unified front against it.

The attacks underscore the fragile state of Gulf security and the complex interplay of diplomacy and military actions amid ongoing Iran-US tensions. The situation remains volatile as regional actors continue their mediation efforts while facing direct consequences of the conflict.
