Former Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani Dies at 74, Leaving Lasting Legacy

The office of the former Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, announced his death at age 74 on Sunday. Sheikh Hamad, the fifth Emir of Qatar, is remembered as a transformative leader who propelled Qatar from a small Gulf state with limited influence into a significant regional and global player. His rise to power in 1995 marked a strategic turning point, initiating a period of modernization and reform that lasted until his abdication in 2013.

During his nearly two decades of rule, Sheikh Hamad spearheaded major developments in natural gas, establishing Qatar as the world’s largest exporter of liquefied natural gas through full investment in the North Field gas project. He also founded the Al Jazeera media network in 1996, which became a major global news outlet, enhancing Qatar’s international influence. Additionally, he prioritized education and scientific research by creating an educational city in Doha and attracting prestigious international universities.

In foreign policy, Sheikh Hamad adopted an active role, mediating in regional conflicts in Lebanon, Sudan, Afghanistan, and the Palestinian territories. He was notably the only Arab leader to visit Gaza in 2012 to oversee humanitarian aid delivery and also visited southern Lebanon after the 2006 war to coordinate reconstruction efforts. Under his leadership, Qatar secured the hosting rights for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the first held in the Middle East.

On June 25, 2013, Sheikh Hamad made a rare move in the Arab world by voluntarily transferring power to his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. His legacy is now a challenge for Qatar’s current leadership, which must maintain the country’s influential status amid complex relations with the United States, Iran, Lebanon, and its mediation role in Gaza.
