The story · English

On July 4, a Cathay Pacific flight from Hong Kong to London Heathrow nearly faced a midair interception by NATO fighter jets due to a communication breakdown. The long-haul flight, which departed Hong Kong at approximately 8:40 a.m. and was scheduled to last nearly 14 hours, was flying over Romanian airspace at 38,000 feet when air traffic controllers lost radio contact with the pilots. Despite repeated attempts, the controllers could not reach the aircraft, which then crossed into Hungarian airspace without establishing communication.

This loss of contact triggered a "potential security alert," prompting NATO to scramble fighter jets to intercept the plane. The jets approached the Cathay Pacific aircraft and issued a warning signal to the pilots. Shortly after, the pilots reestablished communication with the flight control center and confirmed that there was no emergency. Following this, the fighter jets returned to base, and the flight continued safely to London.

Cathay Pacific stated it is conducting a thorough review, including discussions with the flight crew. The airline confirmed the aircraft remained on its approved flight path throughout the journey. Investigators are considering possible radio system malfunctions or pilot error, such as tuning to the wrong frequency. Some analysts have speculated whether the pilots might have fallen asleep during the incident. Aviation regulators are currently examining all these possibilities to determine the exact cause of the communication failure.
