Gibraltar Names Airport Terminal After Sir Joshua Hassan, Celebrated Jewish Leader

Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory, has announced a historic decision to name the terminal of its international airport after Sir Joshua Hassan, the revered Jewish leader and first Chief Minister of Gibraltar. Born in 1915 and passing in 1997, Sir Joshua Hassan is widely regarded as the father of modern Gibraltar. A lawyer and politician, he led the territory for over 20 years across two terms and was instrumental in championing self-determination against Spanish pressures.

Beyond his political achievements, Sir Joshua was a proud and active member of Gibraltar's Jewish community, which has deep roots in the territory. The Gibraltar International Airport (GIB) is notable worldwide for its runway crossing the main road, serving as the territory’s primary and strategic gateway. The local government’s decision to name the terminal "Sir Joshua Hassan Terminal" honors his pivotal role in shaping modern Gibraltar.

Fabian Picardo, the current Chief Minister of Gibraltar, stated, "Sir Joshua Hassan was the architect of modern Gibraltar and our democracy. Naming our main gateway after him is a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to this territory." This tribute also highlights the unique status of Gibraltar’s Jewish community, which, despite its small size of a few hundred families, is one of the most integrated and influential communities globally relative to its size. Jewish Gibraltarians have held key roles in local politics, law, and economy for generations and are known for vibrant religious life and exceptional coexistence with Christian and Muslim populations.

The airport terminal naming not only honors Sir Joshua Hassan but also warmly acknowledges the success story of the entire Jewish community in Gibraltar.
