Gibraltar Names International Airport After Jewish Leader Sir Joshua Hassan

The government of Gibraltar announced this week that its international airport will be renamed in honor of Sir Joshua Hassan, one of Gibraltar's most prominent leaders and a significant Jewish figure in the history of the British Commonwealth. This renaming makes Gibraltar's airport the second in the world named after a Jewish leader, alongside Israel's Ben Gurion Airport.

Sir Joshua Hassan led Gibraltar for four decades during critical periods of constitutional and political change, laying the foundations for modern Gibraltar. He was a staunch advocate for the freedom and self-determination of Gibraltar's residents against Spain's demands to transfer sovereignty over the peninsula. His efforts culminated in a historic 1967 referendum, where the people of Gibraltar overwhelmingly chose to remain under British sovereignty.

Hassan's daughter, Fler Hassan-Nahum, a former deputy mayor of Jerusalem and innovation and trade envoy for the Israeli Foreign Ministry, expressed the family's gratitude, highlighting the special significance of having the airport named after a Jewish leader. Her sister, Marlene Hassan, added that the decision ensures Hassan's legacy will continue to influence Gibraltar's future for generations to come.
