Former Qatar Emir and Father of Current Ruler Sheikh Hamad Dies at 74

The office of the Emir of Qatar has officially announced the death of the former Emir and father of the current ruler, Sheikh Hamad bin Tamim Al Thani, at the age of 74. The Qatari government news agency reported his passing but did not disclose the cause of death. Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani was born on January 1, 1952, and ruled Qatar from 1995, when he deposed his father Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani during a vacation in Switzerland, until June 2013, when he formally transferred power to his 33-year-old son, Tamim.

During his 18-year reign, Sheikh Hamad transformed Qatar from a relatively obscure state into a significant international hub, leveraging the country's vast energy wealth. Under his leadership, Qatar acquired the luxury department store Harrods in London and established the influential Al Jazeera news network. However, Qatar's rise also caused tensions with regional and Western allies due to its independent foreign policy, including close ties with Iran, the terrorist group Hamas, and Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood.

In October 2012, Sheikh Hamad became the first head of state to visit the Gaza Strip since Hamas took control five years earlier, pledging $400 million for projects and investments. During the visit, Gaza radio stations played a song titled "Thank You, Qatar." He also met with then-Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni at the UN General Assembly in 2007. Qatar allowed an Israeli trade office to operate in Doha until it was closed following Israeli military actions in Gaza in late 2008. Unlike Bahrain and the UAE, which normalized relations with Israel in 2020, Qatar maintained a distance.

One of Sheikh Hamad's final initiatives before stepping down was opening an official office for the Taliban in Afghanistan, facilitating U.S.-Taliban talks that eventually led to NATO and U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021.
