OpenAI Shifts Focus to Business Market, Launches ChatGPT Work and Ends Atlas Browser

OpenAI is intensifying its focus on the business sector by launching several new applications, most notably ChatGPT Work, an AI agent-based platform designed to handle complex tasks. This move is part of a strategic pivot to streamline its product offerings and expand its presence in the business market, following the success of competitor Anthropic, which has surpassed OpenAI in revenue and valuation by targeting this segment.

ChatGPT Work enables businesses to gather information, plan, and execute actions using various tools, files, and applications on a user's computer, producing outputs like documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. It supports creating agents for one-time or recurring tasks and is aimed at operational, marketing, sales, and product development teams. Many of these capabilities are also available on Anthropic's cloud platform, which has impacted stocks of companies in related service areas.

Alongside the launch of GPT-5.6 and ChatGPT Work, OpenAI consolidated its Codex code-writing platform into its Mac and Windows applications, allowing users to switch between classic chat mode, the new Work mode, or Codex. Concurrently, OpenAI is discontinuing products outside its core business focus, including the AI browser Atlas, launched in October last year as a modern alternative to Chrome. Atlas failed to gain traction beyond initial curiosity and held an insignificant market share, leading to its termination as part of OpenAI's renewed strategic direction.

This follows earlier steps such as shutting down the video generation model Gen-2 (Sora) in March and ending a collaboration agreement with Disney announced at the end of 2023. OpenAI's strategic realignment reflects a shift toward higher revenue potential and investor appeal by concentrating on business-oriented AI solutions.
