Masked Man at Ali Khamenei's Funeral Identified as His Severely Injured Grandson

On February 28, Ali Khamenei was assassinated along with several family members in a deadly attack that also wounded others. Last week, Iran held a massive national funeral for Khamenei, featuring large public ceremonies and official mourning events in Tehran. During the official ceremonies, a young man wearing a black baseball cap, dark glasses, and a medical mask covering his entire face appeared beside the coffins of Khamenei and his family, sparking international media speculation.

Western media and social networks, including CNN, initially speculated that the masked figure was Mojtaba Khamenei, Ali Khamenei's son and heir, who has not been seen publicly since the attack. Rumors suggested he disguised himself to attend the funeral secretly for security reasons. However, Iranian local media clarified the man's identity as Mohammad Jawad Khamenei, the late leader's grandson. Mohammad Jawad was present during the February 28 attack and survived but sustained severe injuries, including burns and shrapnel wounds to his face and head.

He attended the funeral while still undergoing intensive medical rehabilitation. The mask, glasses, and cap served to protect his wounds from infection amid the large crowds and to conceal his severe facial injuries during the official event. His visible presence in the front row, despite his condition, became a poignant symbol of the family's tragedy, alongside the small coffin of a young family member who also died in the attack.
