Jewish Democratic Presidential Hopefuls Face Rising Anti-Israel Sentiment Ahead of 2028 Primaries

Three prominent Jewish leaders within the Democratic Party, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, and former Obama Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, are positioning themselves as potential presidential candidates for the 2028 election. Each has expressed a nuanced stance on Israel, affirming its right to exist and defend itself while criticizing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government and policies. Emanuel described Netanyahu's security approach as leading Israel into a dead end and straining U.S.-Israel relations, calling Israel "pariah-like" and isolated from both the U.S. and Europe. Shapiro and Pritzker echoed similar concerns, with Shapiro calling for a change in the U.S.-Israel alliance and labeling Netanyahu's leadership as dangerous and isolating. All three support a two-state solution and have criticized Israeli actions in Gaza.

Despite their pro-Israel positions, these Jewish leaders face growing opposition within the Democratic Party from an increasingly vocal anti-Israel faction, some elements of which have been accused of antisemitism. This faction's rise complicates their path to the nomination, as they must navigate a party where support for Palestinians has surged. According to a Gallup poll, about two-thirds of Democrats now sympathize more with Palestinians than Israelis, with Israeli support dropping from 40% in 2022 to 17% in 2026, while Palestinian support rose from 38% to 65%.

Jewish Americans, traditionally strong Democratic supporters, are reconsidering their political alignment amid this shift. The three leaders emphasize their unwavering support for a safe Jewish homeland and reject accusations of dual loyalty, which have been used to question their suitability for public office. Their challenge lies in balancing principled support for Israel with criticism of Netanyahu's policies while confronting the party's growing anti-Israel and antisemitic currents as they seek the Democratic presidential nomination.
