Widow of Israeli Killed in Egypt Criticizes Delays in Justice for Murderer

Mor Shamli, widow of Alon Shamli who was murdered by a local Egyptian policeman during a trip in Egypt, expressed frustration over the prolonged delay in bringing the killer to justice. In an interview on Kan News, she said the murderer, caught on the day of the shooting, remains unpunished. Initially told the killer awaited sentencing, she was later informed the trial would only begin in three months, making her feel mocked by the process.

Alon Shamli and two other Israelis, Amnon Bezalel and Haggai Efrat, were shot dead by the Egyptian officer in Alexandria, Sinai, the day after the October 7 massacre. Mor criticized the Israeli embassy for not evacuating Israelis despite open borders and ongoing risks. She also lamented the ambassador’s silence about the incident during a lengthy interview.

Mor described the family’s struggle to retrieve Alon’s clothes, a cherished memory still in Egypt. The Foreign Ministry initially told her the process would take time, then said the items were likely discarded, effectively passing Egyptian responses without intervention. She expressed deep pain over the ongoing life around her contrasted with the trauma of her husband’s death.

The interview highlights the emotional toll on the Shamli family and the bureaucratic obstacles they face seeking justice and closure. The killing occurred amid heightened tensions following the October 7 attacks, with multiple Hamas-directed plots thwarted from Turkey.
