Dwayne Johnson Returns as Maui in Disney’s Live-Action Moana with New Co-Star Catherine Laia

Disney has released a new live-action adaptation of Moana, nearly a decade after the original animated film captivated audiences worldwide. Directed by Thomas Kail, known for his work on the musical Hamilton, this remake features Dwayne Johnson reprising his role as the demigod Maui, now portrayed in live-action rather than voice alone. Alongside him is 19-year-old Australian actress Catherine Laia, who was selected from over 32,000 candidates to play Moana, marking her first major film role.

The production was a massive undertaking, with a 40-acre set built in Atlanta replicating the fictional Motunui island, including traditional Polynesian huts and large water tanks for ocean scenes. The film emphasizes authentic Polynesian culture and environmental themes, with costumes handmade for over 200 Polynesian extras. Johnson’s portrayal of Maui draws inspiration from his late grandfather, Chief Peter Maivia, a professional wrestler and cultural figure.

In a recent press conference, Johnson reflected on the personal significance of the role, sharing stories about his grandfather’s legacy and the importance of vulnerability, especially for men. He also addressed ongoing typecasting challenges, noting the pressure to meet public expectations tied to his "The Rock" persona. Laia spoke about the responsibility of representing an entire culture and her journey from seeking external validation to trusting her own instincts.

The film aims to honor the original 2016 version while introducing new elements, with Laia describing her performance as a personal connection to Moana’s story of self-discovery. Both leads highlighted the film’s message of empathy and cultural pride, hoping it resonates with new generations amid social pressures. The live-action Moana is seen by some in Hollywood as a successful remake, breaking a pattern of uninspired Disney adaptations.

The movie’s release continues Disney’s trend of reimagining animated classics with live actors, following titles like Snow White, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin.
