Democratic Senate Candidate Graham Platner Withdraws Amid Rape Allegations and Party Pressure

Graham Platner, the Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate from Maine, officially withdrew from the race late Wednesday night following intense pressure from party leaders after a rape allegation surfaced against him. The accusation, reported by Politico, came from a woman who said Platner forced himself on her in late 2021 when he entered her home intoxicated despite her repeated refusals. Platner, a 41-year-old U.S. military veteran and vocal critic of Israel, had been running against incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins. His campaign was marked by sharp criticism of pro-Israel lobbies in the U.S.

In recent months, Platner's past controversies emerged, including allegations of domestic violence, antisemitic social media posts, and a tattoo featuring a Nazi symbol he claimed not to understand. His ex-partner, Lindsay Pipefield, contradicted this, revealing messages indicating he and fellow Marines deliberately chose the symbol. Platner denied all allegations, calling them a "coordinated conspiracy" by powerful forces and the corporate media aimed at forcing his withdrawal before the candidate replacement deadline next week. He also criticized organizations like AIPAC, asserting his opposition was to taxpayer funding for what he described as genocide in Gaza.

Following the allegations, key Democratic figures including Senators Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, and New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani withdrew their support. The Maine Democratic Party announced it would not invest resources in Platner’s campaign while his name remained on the ballot. His campaign manager, Maurice Katz, sent texts to supporters claiming the party coordinated behind closed doors to exclude Platner’s backers.

President Donald Trump commented on the scandal, casting doubt on the accuser’s claims by asking reporters, "Do you believe the woman?" The decisive blow to Platner’s campaign was the detailed testimony of Jenny Rasico, his former partner, who described the alleged assault and her initial reluctance to speak out due to her political support for him. After the story broke, Platner suspended his campaign but denied guilt. The Maine Democratic Party called for his immediate withdrawal and is preparing a special convention to select a replacement candidate by July 27. Potential replacements include Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows and former state Senate president Troy Jackson.
