MK Stern Sparks Controversy Over Comments on Ultra-Orthodox During IDF Reserve Duty Debate

A heated exchange erupted during a Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee meeting focused on a bill to freeze arrest orders against yeshiva students who refuse military service. MK Elazar Stern from Yesh Atid questioned why some do not feel animosity toward the ultra-Orthodox sector, citing their celebrations in the Galilee during the IDF reserve duty period. Stern asked, "How do you not hate the ultra-Orthodox when you see them celebrating in Bein Hazmanim in the Galilee while everyone else is in reserve duty?" This remark provoked sharp responses from coalition MKs.

Shas MK Yinon Azulai responded strongly, saying, "I do not know a Jew who hates another Jew. If you hate Jews, you need to examine your own Judaism." Religious Zionist MK Moshe Solomon also intervened, telling Stern, "You must not hate a Jew, no matter what." Following the backlash, Stern clarified that he does not hate people, not just Jews.

The confrontation reflects the ongoing political and social tensions surrounding the issue of drafting yeshiva students. The committee discussions center on a proposed law to halt legal proceedings and arrest warrants recently issued against yeshiva students who failed to report to recruitment offices.
