Olympic Committee Temporarily Lifts Suspension of Russian Olympic Committee

More than four years after Russia's invasion of Ukraine and following one of the most significant suspensions in global sports, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on Tuesday the temporary lifting of the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee. The suspension had been in effect since October 12, 2023. The decision came after a legal review determined that the Russian Olympic Committee no longer includes regional sports organizations from territories under the jurisdiction of Ukraine's National Olympic Committee. Furthermore, Russia confirmed it does not conduct and will not conduct activities in those areas.

As a result, the IOC's previous recommendations from 2022 and 2023 barring Russian athletes and teams from international competitions are no longer applicable. This move coincides with the opening of qualification periods for the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics and the 2028 Winter Youth Olympics in Dolomites and Tarvisio, aiming to ensure equal competition access for all athletes.

However, the IOC emphasized that Russian athletes returning to international competition must comply with anti-doping regulations, including participation in a national testing program reported to the International Testing Agency. New returning athletes will undergo multiple tests based on sport-specific risk assessments. The IOC also stated it will not host events in Russia nor invite Russian government officials to its events. Decisions regarding the display of the Russian flag, anthem, colors, or other symbols at the Olympics will be made at an appropriate time.

The IOC reaffirmed its unchanged stance condemning Russia's invasion of Ukraine and expressed continued solidarity with the Ukrainian Olympic community.
