Democratic Senate Candidate Graham Plattner Accused of Rape and Suspends Campaign

Graham Plattner, a controversial and far-left Democratic Senate candidate known for his extreme views and criticism of Israel, has been accused of rape by a woman with whom he had a two-year relationship. The accuser, Jenny Rasico, alleged that in 2021 Plattner entered her home without permission and raped her despite her clear refusal. Rasico, who identifies as a Democrat and supporter of many of Plattner's positions, stated she came forward to provide a clearer picture of his character for voters. Plattner vehemently denied the allegations, calling them "completely false" and "serious and grave lies" in a social media video.

Following the accusations, Plattner announced he was suspending his campaign to consider his next steps, acknowledging the potential political damage amid a tight Senate race that could determine control of the chamber in the November elections. He canceled several campaign events but has not made a final decision on whether to continue. According to election law, he must withdraw by July 13 to allow the Democratic Party to select a replacement candidate.

The Democratic Party and prominent figures swiftly condemned Plattner and called for his immediate withdrawal. The Senate Democrats' campaign arm, which had opposed Plattner since the primaries, declared it would not fund his campaign while he remains the nominee. Senator Elizabeth Warren, a former supporter, stated there can be no tolerance for sexual violence and urged Plattner to step down and face the allegations outside the race. Another ally, Ro Khanna, also withdrew his support, citing the seriousness and credibility of the accusations.

Plattner's campaign had already been marred by numerous scandals, including a Nazi-like tattoo on his chest, past associations with antisemitic influencers, and controversial statements praising a 2014 Hamas attack that killed Israeli soldiers. He has faced accusations from former partners of infidelity and inappropriate sexual conduct, as well as past offensive social media posts targeting women and minorities. Despite these controversies, he won the Democratic primary and gained significant attention within the party for his populist and extreme positions.

The rape allegations represent a critical turning point that may end Plattner's candidacy and reshape the Democratic contest for the Senate seat.
