British F-35 Jets Intercept Russian Recon Plane Near HMS Prince of Wales in North Sea

Tensions escalated in the North Sea last week when a Russian Bear-F maritime reconnaissance aircraft repeatedly approached the British aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales, part of a NATO naval task force operating near Iceland. According to the UK Ministry of Defence, the Russian plane flew at a low altitude and dangerously close to the carrier, while dropping about ten sonar buoys into the sea, devices used to detect submarines and underwater vessels.

The British forces attempted to communicate with the Russian aircraft over international radio frequencies but received no response. In response, two F-35 fighter jets were scrambled from the carrier to escort and push the Russian plane away from the task force's operational area. The UK Ministry of Defence condemned the Russian actions as "unsafe and unprofessional."

The naval group, commanded by NATO and including approximately 1,500 British military personnel, was conducting operations near Iceland at the time. This incident occurs amid rising tensions between the UK and Russia, following recent British seizures of oil tankers linked to Russia's "shadow fleet" in the English Channel and warnings from UK security officials about increased Russian military activity near British waters.

The British government continues to monitor Russian maneuvers closely, emphasizing the importance of maintaining secure and professional conduct in international waters to avoid escalation.
