Israeli Author Merav Damari Explores Class Divides and Cultural Alienation in 1990s Academia

Merav Damari, founder of the social organization "Ro'im Rechok" and a prominent figure in Israeli cultural and social activism, has released her debut novel, "Lipstick Red," published by Kinneret Zmora. The novel, set in mid-1990s academia, follows Yasmin, a young researcher from Ashdod who integrates into a privileged group of youths from Haifa's affluent Danya neighborhood. Through this narrative, Damari dissects Israel's social class disparities and challenges the concept of a cultural "melting pot."

Damari, 62, who grew up in Beersheba during the 1960s and 70s and now lives in Tel Aviv, draws on her personal experiences of cultural alienation moving from the periphery to the center. She recounts her shock upon discovering the cultural divide in Tel Aviv after her army service and the mental disdain toward Mizrahi culture prevalent at the time. The novel is not autobiographical but inspired by her life, including the tragic death of her sister in 1994, which coincides with the book's timeline and the national trauma of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin's assassination in 1995.

Damari emphasizes that her work is not fueled by anger or victimhood but aims to present a nuanced view of Israeli society's complexities. She highlights the ongoing mental contempt toward cultural traditions and the political exploitation of ethnic divides, despite some progress in social integration. Her commitment to social change is reflected in her leadership of "Ro'im Rechok," which supports marginalized youth in peripheral areas to access higher education and artistic careers.

Following recent conflicts, Damari's organization expanded its support to youths affected by trauma, underscoring the urgent need to address societal fractures. She concludes that despite Israel's social and political turmoil, there remains a shared journey forward, a metaphor she encapsulates as "riding together in the same car," emphasizing collective perseverance and understanding.
